who is nick hagen?

I’ve been immersed in screenwriting and film production for over two decades. Following the path of many of my filmmaking idols, I spent my twenties self-producing several short and feature-length films—my own version of film school.

In 2007, I entered The Storyteller Challenge, a nationwide contest hosted by 21st Century Fox, the Producers Guild of America, and Myspace. After submitting a concept and short film, I was selected as the winner based on the strength of my pitch at Fox Studios, receiving a cash prize and a yearlong development deal.

Soon after, I read an interview with Tyler Perry where he emphasized the importance of audience-building: If you build an audience, Hollywood will come to you. Inspired, I created The Haunting of Sunshine Girl, an original IP that gained over 300 million views on YouTube. Alongside my production partners, Mercedes Rose and Paige McKenzie, we spent years cultivating a passionate fanbase. Our efforts led to a New York Times bestselling book series and a television project currently in development.

Following that success, we partnered with Disney to develop an original concept titled Misfits.

In 2024, I was named to the International Screenwriters' Association’s (ISA) Top 25 Screenwriters to Watch list and added to their official development slate. That same year, I was honored as a semi-finalist in Final Draft’s Big Break Screenplay Contest—recognition that reaffirmed the strength and momentum of my current work.

Since then, I’ve continued to work as a screenwriter with my writing partner, Dana Speer. We are currently represented by Paul Weitzman at Culture Creative Entertainment. Together, we’ve developed both film and television projects with a wide range of producers, including:

I remain focused on building emotionally engaging, commercially viable stories—and breaking further into the Hollywood system with each project.

In addition to my professional work, I’m a busy family man and proud soccer dad. When I’m not writing or working, I’m usually playing the role of amateur taxi driver for my four very specific clients (my kids), shuttling them from practices, games, and rehearsals to wherever life takes them next. I also serve on a local board, where I stay involved in my community and help support programs that matter to families like mine.
